7th APCAT Summit

The 7th APCAT Summit took place in Bali from 1st to 3rd December 2023. The summit brought together 48 Mayors along with 308 delegates from 62 cities of 10 countries across the Asia Pacific region. 7th APCAT Summit increased political commitment of local leaders for advancing accountable and sustainable health promotion. 203 young people took part in 1st APCAT Tobacco Free Youth Festival that preceded the Summit to not only resolve to grow without tobacco, but also to foster leadership and accountability among the youth for advancing tobacco control.

Objectives:

  1. Reinforce leadership: reinforcing mayors’ leadership to prioritize prevention of tobacco use, control of communicable and noncommunicable diseases and improvement of vaccination in strategic and operational planning and in policy, fiscal and legislative instruments.
  2. Build accountability: hold mayors accountable to protect the development and implementation of public health policies from undue influence of unhealthy commodity industries. Ensure public-private partnership in implementation, monitoring program performance and effectiveness.
  3. Ensure sustainability: invest in and sustain local health system capacity, and ensure a whole-of-government approach for prevention of tobacco use, and control communicable and noncommunicable diseases, and improvement of vaccination. Share evidences, lessons learned and countermeasures to improve program outcomes.

The 7th Asia Pacific Summit of Mayors is jointly organised by Asia Pacific Cities Alliance for Health and Development (APCAT), Ministry of Health, Republic of Indonesia; Ministry of Home Affairs, Republic of Indonesia, National Centre for Health Promotion, Ministry of Health, Cambodia; Bloomberg Philanthropies; Cities of Bogor, Denpasar and Klungkung of Indonesia; Balanga City, Philippines; Association of All Health Offices Indonesia (ADINKES), Indonesia Mayor and Regent Alliance, Indonesian Public Health Association; Udayana Central; Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids, Vital Strategies; Tobacco Free Generation International, The International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (The Union); APCAT Parliamentarians and APCAT Media.

Format:

Six sessions including opening, closing, 3 Mayors panel discussions and expert presentations. A pre youth leaders’ summit and a post site visit to klungkung also took place. See Annex 1 for detailed agenda.
